Elaphe
obsoleta obsoleta |
|
A powerful, medium-sized constrictor. Individuals normally reach an adult size of 4 to 6 feet; however, specimens have been known to exceed 8 feet in length. Hatchling Black Rat Snakes are about 12 inches long when they hatch and display a pattern of dark gray or black blotches and spots over a background color of light gray. As the snake ages, this pattern begins to change to primarily black in the adult. Slight traces of the juvenile pattern may remain even in the adult Black Rat Snake, resulting in small specks of white, the underneath of the chin and throat are usually white, often mottled with gray and black blotches. A very popular beginner snake. |

Intermontane Rat Snake Elaphe guttata intermontana |
|
Although
this is not technically a corn snake, the Great Plains rat snake is a
subspecies of the corn snake (Elaphe guttata emoryi) and they
probably interbreed where their ranges overlap. Closely related to the
Cornsnake and a main genetic ingredient in Creamsicle Corns. Great
Plains rat snakes produce small
clutches of rather large eggs. The
hatchlings mature rather quickly and are a good snake for beginners. Hatchlings are much more robust than Cornsnake
hatchlings, ranging from 8-14", and adults range from
24-48". Overall, a stockier, heavier-bodied snake than a
Cornsnake. They make very good "pet" snakes, allow themselves to be handled and eat mice easily, and sometimes referred to as the prairie rat snake. |
