Pituophis melanoleucus vertebralis

Having very intense variable colors, Cape gopher snakes exhibit great individual variation in both color and pattern. They are usually very heavily marked, with red or orange shaped blotches at the front of the dorsal surface, and black square blotches at the rear. In the middle of the body, there is a gradual transition from one type of marking to the other. The background color is usually yellow, red, orange or brown. The Cape Gopher Snake's head is usually free of markings, although they may exhibit shading from dark orange to yellow or white. Adult Length: 36-66 inches.

Cape Gopher Snakes are very nervous animals, they are also active. Hatchlings are robust and active upon hatching. Preferring cooler temperatures than most other snakes and should not be kept at temperatures higher than 78 or 79 degrees Fahrenheit. The Cape Gophersnake tend to be a more slender Pituophis and attempts to bulk them up can often result in the onset of regurgitation.

Pituophis melanoleucus annectens

San Diego Gopher snakes usually grow to around 4 to 5 feet with a few specimens reaching 6 feet, being one of the smallest Pituophis.

The San Diego Gopher snake makes a very good first-time snake for many reptile keepers, as it is easily handle-able, a good feeder, and easy to care for. Unfortunately hatchling San Diego Gopher snakes may tend to be a bit nippy and it takes some patience & handling to calm them down.

They come in a variety of color morphs - Albino, Albino Applegate phase, Anerythristic, hypomelanistic, Ghost, snow, and striped specimens are commonly available as well.  I am currently working several different morphs of this species.

Pituophis catenifer deserticola

Occasionally growing to lengths in excess of 72 inches, they average between 36 and 48 inches in length. Great Basin Gopher Snake is commonly misidentified as a Rattlesnake because of its superficially similar coloration and more importantly, its behavior when feeling threatened.
